Prince Mayowa Aroloye has emerged as the Owa-elect of Idanre Kingdom in Ondo State after securing a decisive victory in the traditional kingship selection exercise conducted by the eight accredited kingmakers of the kingdom.

The prince emerged victorious after polling seven out of the eight votes cast, representing 87.5 per cent of the total votes, to defeat his closest challenger, Prince Babatope Aroloye, who secured one vote, representing 12.5 per cent.

A total of seven princes contested for the highly revered traditional stool, which holds significant cultural and historical importance to the people of Idanre.

The election was conducted by the eight accredited kingmakers in accordance with the traditional selection process of the kingdom.

Following the conclusion of the voting exercise and the announcement of the results, the Secretary of Idanre Local Government, Felix Akinfala, who presided over the election, formally declared Prince Mayowa Aroloye as the Owa-elect.

His emergence followed a competitive selection process involving princes from the ruling house, with the kingmakers exercising their traditional responsibility of choosing the next occupant of the revered throne.

Earlier, the Chairman of Idanre Local Government, Hon. Smart Adeuyi Omotadowa, had appealed to all the contestants to maintain peace, unity and mutual understanding throughout the selection process.

Omotadowa urged the princes not to allow the outcome of the election to create divisions among them, emphasising that they all belonged to the same ruling house and should regard themselves as members of one family.

He further encouraged those who did not emerge victorious to cooperate with the successful candidate and support the traditional institution in the interest of the kingdom’s development and continued unity.

The emergence of Prince Mayowa Aroloye as Owa-elect represents an important milestone in the traditional leadership succession of Idanre Kingdom.

The development is expected to usher in a new chapter for the ancient community, as attention turns to the subsequent traditional and official processes required for his eventual installation as the new Owa of Idanre.

The Owa stool remains one of the most respected traditional institutions in Idanre, serving as an important symbol of the kingdom’s cultural heritage, identity and traditional authority.
