Polio Eradication: Akure South Council Boss Applauds Public Acceptance, Health Workers’ Commitment
The Executive Chairman of Akure South Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Fasua, has commended the overwhelming acceptance and participation of residents in the May round of the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) aimed at eradicating polio. Speaking through the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adeola Fynch, at the grand finale of the exercise, the chairman expressed deep satisfaction with the massive turnout across communities in the council area.

Hon. Adeola emphasized that the remarkable public response, particularly from parents and caregivers, is a strong indicator that myths and misconceptions about vaccines are steadily being dispelled. She noted that the level of awareness and enthusiasm observed during the exercise was unprecedented and encouraging for future health campaigns. “Our people are beginning to truly understand the importance of immunization, and this growing trust is vital for the success of public health programs,” she said.
She further praised the dedication of frontline health workers who, despite challenges, worked tirelessly in markets, schools, churches, and door-to-door to ensure no child was left behind. According to her, the success of the vaccination campaign was made possible by the collaboration between the health teams and community members who embraced the initiative wholeheartedly.
Hon. Fasua reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to continuous health education and community sensitization to sustain the gains made. He called on all stakeholders to build on this momentum to ensure Akure South remains polio-free and a model for effective grassroots health interventions.
