Nigerian Woman Calls for Ban on DNA Tests, Says They Destroy Marriages

By Asaye Bankole

A Nigerian woman has sparked an online debate after calling for the ban of DNA paternity tests, arguing that the practice is contributing to the breakdown of marriages and families.

The woman made the controversial remarks in a video shared on X, where she questioned why married men would subject children born during their marriages to DNA testing if they genuinely trusted their wives.

According to her, once a child is born within a marriage, the husband should accept the child as his, even in situations where the wife may have been unfaithful.

“Men are always cheating, but when a woman cheats and brings another child, it becomes a problem,” she said.

She argued that a man who truly trusts his wife should not feel the need to conduct a paternity test.

The woman also questioned why a man would marry a woman he does not trust enough to accept her children without demanding proof of biological paternity.

She repeatedly called for DNA testing to be prohibited, claiming that the availability of such tests is creating suspicion between couples and contributing to the collapse of homes.

“Ban DNA. DNA is destroying marriages and homes,” she said, insisting that marriages would be more stable without paternity testing.

Comparing modern relationships with those of previous generations, she said DNA testing was not available to their forefathers and that children born within a home were traditionally accepted as the husband’s children.

She further suggested that infidelity could sometimes be a mistake that a person regrets.

According to her, a woman who cheats may feel remorse but choose not to confess because she fears how her husband might react.

The woman questioned whether seeking a DNA test was worthwhile if the ultimate goal of a couple was to maintain peace and stability in their marriage.

Her comments have generated mixed reactions online, with Nigerians debating issues surrounding paternity, trust, infidelity, marital responsibility and whether DNA testing protects families or contributes to their breakup.
