The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed illicit drugs and psychotropic substances valued at approximately ₦2.8 billion in Edo State as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse.

The destruction exercise, which took place in Benin City, involved a total of 73,463.21 kilogrammes of seized narcotics intercepted during various operations across the state.

Cannabis sativa accounted for the largest portion of the destroyed substances, weighing over 73,000 kilogrammes. Other drugs destroyed included Tramadol, Diazepam, Codeine syrup, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Heroin.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), described the destruction as a strong demonstration of the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and reducing substance abuse in the country.

He noted that the exercise went beyond the physical destruction of narcotics, stressing that it reflected the determination of law enforcement authorities to safeguard communities from the dangers associated with illicit drugs.

The Edo State Government also reiterated its support for the fight against drug abuse, describing narcotics as a major threat to public health, security, and the future of young people. Authorities pledged continued collaboration with the NDLEA and revealed plans to strengthen rehabilitation efforts for individuals battling drug addiction.

Officials further disclosed that many of the seized drugs were recovered from vehicles, trucks, and other concealed locations during intelligence-led operations.

The NDLEA urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant and play active roles in preventing drug abuse among youths, warning that the social and economic consequences of substance abuse remain devastating.
