Lagos Queries Sanitation Officer Over Alleged ₦20,000 Bribe
The Lagos State Government has launched disciplinary proceedings against an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) after a viral video allegedly showed him collecting a ₦20,000 bribe from a suspected environmental offender.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development on Friday via his X account, describing the alleged act as a serious violation of the agency’s ethics and standards.
According to the commissioner, the officer has been issued an official query, while a Personnel Management Board (PMB) will be set up to investigate the allegations in line with the Lagos State Civil Service Rules.
Wahab stressed that the state government has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, adding that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
He also reminded residents that bribery is a criminal offence for both the person offering and the person receiving it, urging Lagosians to comply with the law rather than attempting to influence enforcement officers.
The query letter, dated July 10, 2026, alleged that the officer accepted ₦20,000 from an offender, an incident reportedly captured on video and circulated on social media. The letter noted that the footage was brought to the attention of the Lagos State Governor.

The alleged action was classified as corruption and extortion, which constitute serious misconduct under the Public Service Rules.
The officer has been directed to submit a written explanation within 48 hours stating why disciplinary action should not be taken against him. Failure to respond within the stipulated period may result in further disciplinary proceedings.
The state government reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity in the public service, assuring residents that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with established regulations.
