Edo Police Debunk Armed Herdsmen Rumors, Confirm Arrested Men Are Hunters
The Edo State Police Command has issued a statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of four individuals found in possession of firearms. Contrary to widespread speculation on social media, the police have confirmed that the arrested men are hunters from Kano State, not armed herdsmen.

The suspects—Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu—were intercepted by operatives of the Edo Security Network and handed over to the Ikpoba Hill Division. According to police spokesperson Moses Joel Yamu, items recovered from the suspects included three Dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses, and two daggers.
Initial reports falsely claimed the individuals were armed herdsmen arrested at a hotel. However, further investigations revealed the men were hunters traveling from Doguwa in Kano State to Uvbe community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic or tension. He assured residents that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the hunters’ true intentions and to uphold public safety.
The Edo State Police Command emphasized the importance of verifying information through official sources, warning that misinformation can create unnecessary fear and undermine security efforts across the state.
