CAN Distances Self From Cleric, Rules Out Political Endorsements Ahead of 2027 Polls

By Asaye Bankole

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has distanced itself from a cleric allegedly claiming to represent the organisation, insisting that he has no authority to speak or act on its behalf.

The association also reaffirmed its commitment to political neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning individuals and groups against using its name and identity to promote political candidates or parties.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made the clarification in a statement in which he identified Archbishop Chivir Chianson as the cleric involved, stressing that he was neither the association’s General Secretary nor an authorised representative.

According to the statement, Chianson and the group he represents have no official affiliation, working relationship or institutional connection with CAN.

The association emphasised that any political activities, statements or positions taken by the cleric or his group should not be attributed to the Christian body.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Archbishop Chivir Chianson is not the General Secretary of CAN and has no authority or mandate to speak or act on its behalf.

Furthermore, the group he represents has no official affiliation, working relationship or institutional connection with CAN,” the statement read.

CAN warned that it would not tolerate attempts by unauthorised individuals or organisations to exploit its name, reputation and institutional identity for political or personal interests.

Reiterating its position ahead of the 2027 elections, the association maintained that it would not endorse any presidential, governorship or legislative candidate, nor mobilise Christians to support any political party.

Archbishop Okoh explained that while CAN would continue to participate in national discussions and speak on issues affecting the country, its engagement would remain objective and independent of partisan political interests.

“CAN will continue to engage national issues objectively and hold political leaders accountable, irrespective of party affiliation, without endorsing or mobilising support for any political party or candidate,” he stated.

The association urged Christians, members of the public and media organisations to disregard claims suggesting that Chianson or his group officially represents CAN.

It also advised journalists and media outlets to properly verify the identities, credentials and institutional affiliations of individuals presented as officials or representatives of the association before publishing statements attributed to it.

CAN further warned that it would take appropriate measures to protect its name, identity and institutional integrity against unauthorised representation and misrepresentation.

The clarification comes as political activities and consultations gradually intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
