Presidency Dismisses Rumours of Plan to Rename Nigeria, End Sharia Law

The Presidency has refuted claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is considering plans to rename Nigeria or abolish Sharia law, describing the reports as false and misleading.

In a clarification, the Presidency stated that no such proposal is before the Federal Government and urged Nigerians to disregard the rumours circulating on social media and other platforms.

According to the statement, there are no plans to change the country’s name or alter the constitutional status of Sharia law within Nigeria’s legal framework.

The Presidency stressed that major constitutional matters cannot be implemented through speculation or unofficial reports, noting that any amendment to the nation’s constitution must follow established legal and legislative procedures.

It also cautioned against the spread of misinformation capable of creating unnecessary tension, religious misunderstanding, and division among citizens.

Nigerians were advised to verify information through official government channels and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports that could mislead the public.

The clarification follows widespread discussions triggered by claims that the Federal Government was considering constitutional reforms that would include renaming the country and scrapping Sharia law—allegations the Presidency has firmly denied.
