President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, on his 88th birthday.
Falae, a former Minister of Finance, celebrated his milestone birthday on Monday, September 21, 2026.
In a statement released Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu lauded Chief Falae as a distinguished leader whose lifelong dedication to public service, economic policy, and democratic governance has secured his enduring legacy in Nigeria’s history.
A Pillar of Public Service and Economic Leadership
The President commended Falae’s public service record, specifically pointing to his key roles as SGF and Finance Minister, where he helped shape public administration and national economic policy.
A Legacy in the Struggle for Democracy
Tinubu highlighted Falae’s courageous involvement in the pro-democracy movement, notably through the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during Nigeria’s military rule.
Falae was among the prominent leaders who spearheaded the campaign to restore democratic rule following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
“Chief Falae is a patriot whose life reflects a deep commitment to the service of our nation,” Tinubu stated. “As a co-founder and prominent figure in the NADECO movement, he was among Nigerians who advocated the restoration of democratic governance and defended the principles of constitutional rule and citizens’ rights—even at a risk to their lives.”
The President noted that the courage, wisdom, and sacrifices of Falae’s generation serve as an enduring reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and build a prosperous future.
Tinubu concluded his tribute with prayers for Chief Falae’s continued good health, wisdom, and strength as he continues to contribute to the nation’s growth.
