TikTok Denies Restricting Access in Northern Nigeria

By Asaye Bankole

TikTok has denied restricting access to its platform in Northern Nigeria following reports that users in some states have experienced difficulties accessing its services.

The platform’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, Ms Keagile Makgoba, made the clarification in a statement on Monday, insisting that TikTok did not impose the reported restriction.

“We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok,” she said.

Makgoba added that the company was engaging relevant stakeholders to address the reported access difficulties, reaffirming its commitment to providing users with access to the platform.

Earlier, a coalition of civil society organisations called for an independent investigation into the disruption, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The groups reported that users in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano and Sokoto states had experienced difficulties loading videos, viewing content and uploading materials since September 14.

They urged government authorities and telecommunications operators to investigate the incident and clarify whether it resulted from technical problems or an official directive.

However, the cause of the reported disruption remains unclear.
