Tariff Hike: FG Establishes Committee as NLC Suspends Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned one-day protest against a 50% increase in telecom tariffs to engage in further dialogue with the government. This decision follows a constructive meeting with government officials at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

NLC President Joe Ajaero announced that a comprehensive committee will be formed to review the entire tariff structure. “As the largest organization in Africa, our involvement is crucial,” he stated. The committee will consist of five representatives from both the NLC and the government and is expected to report its findings within two weeks.

While the protest is on hold, the NLC remains committed to addressing pressing issues like rising electricity tariffs and excessive worker taxes. Ajaero emphasized that the NLC will not be sidelined in these discussions.

A communiqué issued after the meeting confirmed the establishment of a 10-member committee to tackle these unresolved issues. It is tasked with submitting its report by February 3, 2025.

The NLC urges all Nigerians to remain patient as this vital work unfolds. The communiqué was signed by key leaders, including George Akume, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, Joe Aja.
