Ondo Assembly Committs Anti-land grabbing bill to committee stage

A bill for a law to prohibit forceful entry and illegal occupation of landed properties, violent and fraudulent conducts in relation to landed properties
sponsored by the Ondo State House of Assembly Lawmaker representing Ondo West constituency 1,Hon.Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju when passed into law, the house affirmed will protect land owners, engender peace and development.

The self -sponsored bill by Hon Ogunwumiju who is the Parliamentary Secretary of the Assembly has been committed to the house committee on lands end housing after scaling through the second reading today at a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt.Hon. Olamide Oladij.

Debating on the bill ,the lawmakers observed that land grabbing is becoming rampant in Ondo State, expressing optimism that when the bill is passed into law, it would eradicate forceful invasion and land grabbing.

The Speaker of the House, however commended Hon Ogunwumiju for personally sponsoring the bill , saying that such would further maintain the existing peace in the state.

He later directed the House Committee on Lands and Housing to work on the bill for scrutiny within
a period of two weeks.

Speaking on the bill,Hon Ogunwumiju posited that the bill is a landmark achievement of the 10th Assembly as a way of ensuring that the people of the state further enjoy the dividends of democracy.

According to him, the bill is to curb the menace of land grabbers in the society and prevent people from dubious Agents.

“It would put at bay dubious agents who sells property to two or three people,it will criminalise such act, such that any agent who sells property to a prospective buyer and knows that the land is not for sale, will face a huge penalty”.

He said that the bill will criminalized the menace called “Omo onile” and ensure people who extort land owners are being brought to book informing that task force would be established to ensure land grabbers are immediately dealt.

Hon Ogunwumiju explained that the anti-land grabbing bill would address the issue of those who want to execute judgement in non competent ways because of influence or connections, emphasising that no singular person would be able to present unverifiable judgement and chase people out of properties they have valid documentation for.

He added that the bill would address the concerns of so many things,noting that the bill is in a right direction and thanked the Speaker , Principal officers and other members of the 10th Assembly for doing justice to the bill.

The lawmakers spoke extensively on how the bill would foster better communities and go a long way to protect the society from miscreants and thugs .
