The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed several pumping machines to facilitate the recovery of wreckage from its crashed aircraft in Ondo State, as the operation continues amid challenging underwater conditions.
The Air Force also engaged community leaders and residents of Igbokoda following concerns that the recovery exercise could affect their water supply.
The engagement was led by the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, who assured residents that their concerns would be addressed through appropriate channels.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the pumping machines were deployed to remove water around the crash site and provide access to the main wreckage, which remains submerged and deeply embedded in the riverbed.
He explained that the operation required specialised equipment, technical expertise and careful coordination due to the difficult underwater conditions.
The NAF said recovery personnel were making progress while prioritising their safety and showing respect for the victims.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff reaffirmed the service’s commitment to supporting families affected by the crash.
The Air Force disclosed that approved welfare benefits, including benevolent funds and scholarships for eligible children, would be processed for the affected families.
It also announced the establishment of a dedicated helpline at its headquarters to improve communication with bereaved families and provide timely information.
The NAF assured residents that it would continue engaging the affected community and working with relevant agencies, promising to provide verified updates as the recovery operation progresses.
