The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to provide an update on its preparations for the 2027 General Elections as the countdown to the polls reaches 100 days.
The commission will hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in Abuja.
The event is expected to focus on key aspects of the electoral preparations, including the voters’ register, political party nominations, logistics, security and measures aimed at ensuring credible and transparent elections.
According to a statement issued by INEC’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the meeting will provide an opportunity for the commission to engage major stakeholders and communicate its level of preparedness ahead of the elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, is expected to address the gathering alongside other important stakeholders in the electoral process.
Political party leaders, security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic community, development partners, civil society organisations, election observer groups, disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives are expected to attend.
The commission said the meeting was designed to strengthen transparency, public communication and cooperation among the various stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
The 2027 election preparations are entering a crucial stage, with INEC’s timetable scheduling the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027.
The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are expected to take place on March 6, 2027.
Ahead of the polls, political parties are expected to complete their primaries, nominate candidates and fulfil other statutory requirements outlined in the electoral timetable.
Since assuming office as INEC Chairman in October 2025, Amupitan has repeatedly emphasised the commission’s commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections.
The October 6 engagement is therefore expected to provide Nigerians and other stakeholders with a clearer picture of the commission’s readiness as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
The event will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja and is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Attendance will be by invitation, with accredited journalists and invited guests required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
INEC also announced that the event would be broadcast live on major national television stations and streamed through its official social media platforms.
