Immediate Action Required: Iwaya School’s Cracked Pillars Endanger Pupils’ Safety

Residents of Iwaya, Lagos State, are urgently sounding the alarm over the alarming condition of one of the buildings at St. Francis Junior Grammar School in the Yaba Local Council Development Area. Without prompt intervention, the risk of a tragic incident looms large. The school operates from two buildings, but one of them—a one-storey structure—is exhibiting severe signs of distress with all five pillars suffering from significant cracks of varying degrees.

A concerned parent, who opted for anonymity, has rightly questioned why the state government continues to permit students to learn in such a perilous environment. It is evident that if this were a private facility, regulatory agencies would have already marked the structure for immediate demolition and ordered a swift evacuation.

“It is crucial that decisive action is taken immediately to reinforce these pillars since they are the only aspect displaying such distress,” the parent insisted.

When approached, Mr. Asiwaju Yusuf, an executive council member of the Iwaya Community Development Association (CDA), acknowledged that he was previously unaware of the situation. However, he committed to alerting his chairman and fellow council members to verify these serious claims right away.

Days later, when contacted again, Yusuf confirmed that the CDA is now aware of the building’s condition and is planning to engage with the school authorities. He emphasized the pressing need to address the severe safety risks posed to students, as they cannot be allowed to continue their education in such a hazardous environment. Immediate discussions with the school and relevant stakeholders are essential to safeguard the pupils’ well-being.
