Hon. Ayodele Akande Highlights Key Gains in Water Supply, Sanitation, and Public Hygiene Across Ondo State
The Ondo State Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon. Ayodele Akande, has restated the state government’s commitment to expanding access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygienic living conditions for all residents.
He made this known on Thursday, 7th May 2026, during an interactive session with members of the Association of Independent Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (AINPN) at his office in Akure. The President of the Association, who doubles as the CEO of D Chronicle Media, Olaseeni Oyesusi, led his members to the Commissioner’s office on a courtesy call.
Hon. Akande said his administration has brought professionalism, experience, and innovation to the ministry’s operations. He noted that his background as a seasoned administrator and financial expert has helped reposition the sector for effective service delivery and sustainable development.
The Commissioner highlighted the transformation of the Owena Dam project as a major milestone. He disclosed that the state government has revamped the facility, significantly enhancing the supply of potable water to six Local Government Areas in the Ondo Central Senatorial District. He explained that the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Owena Dam water scheme have increased distribution capacity and brought relief to communities that previously lacked reliable access to clean water. The project, he said, is a strategic intervention to tackle water scarcity in the state.
On public hygiene, Hon. Akande announced new people-centered sanitary initiatives in public schools across Ondo State. He said the ministry has provided dedicated rooms in schools to support female students who experience sudden menstrual cycles while on campus. He described the initiative as a practical step to promote hygiene, dignity, and comfort for schoolgirls, reflecting the government’s compassionate approach to public health. The goal, he added, is to ensure students learn in safe, healthy, and supportive environments.
Hon. Akande commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for the trust placed in him to serve. He described the Governor as a visionary leader whose passion for development and good governance continues to inspire the State Executive Council. He attributed the ministry’s successes to teamwork, dedication, and a shared vision within the administration, stressing that the Governor’s team remains united in advancing growth across all sectors in Ondo State.
Reflecting on his public service journey, the Commissioner expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, noting that service to humanity remains his core drive. He assured residents that the “Omi Irorun” water initiative continues to reach communities across the state, making clean and safe water more accessible to thousands of households. The programme, he said, is improving living standards and reducing the burden of water shortages.
Hon. Akande reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustaining current projects while exploring new strategies to improve water supply, environmental sanitation, and public hygiene. He emphasized that the administration will ensure the dividends of democracy reach every citizen.
Responding to questions, the Commissioner clarified that Blue Economy matters are not under his ministry’s purview. He, however, assured that his ministry will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to achieve comprehensive development and better service delivery for the people of Ondo State.
