Gunshots Erupt as Police and NDLEA Clash Over Arrest of Suspected Drug Dealer

A significant altercation erupted between the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and officers from the Ekeki police division in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, during a decisive attempt to arrest a suspected drug dealer.

On Thursday, police intervened to obstruct NDLEA operatives from apprehending a female suspect, leading to a chaotic confrontation. The clash sent shockwaves through the local community as both security forces discharged numerous gunshots.

Howells Obah, the NDLEA spokesperson for Bayelsa, declared that their team adhered strictly to standard operational procedures during the raid. He emphasized that police officers targeted two NDLEA vehicles with gunfire. The agency is currently taking urgent measures to recover the vehicles and bring the situation under control.

“Our team executed an operation behind the Ekeki Police Division and entered the police station as mandated. However, we discovered that the suspect is the wife of a policeman and was under police protection,” Obah asserted. “They opened fire on two of our vehicles, and we are determined to resolve this matter and avert further escalation.”

Musa Mohammed, the Bayelsa police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that he was en route to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. “I am heading there now to assess the situation and get to the bottom of what occurred,” Mohammed stated.
