FG to Impose $15 Daily Fine on Visa Overstayers, Enforce Entry Bans Under New Immigration Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced stricter immigration measures targeting visa overstayers, including a $15 daily fine and potential entry bans of up to 10 years, as part of the forthcoming Nigeria Visa Policy (NVP) 2025.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed the development during a stakeholders’ engagement held at NECA House, Lagos, on Friday. He noted that although the penalties will be enacted in May, enforcement will commence in August 2025—providing a grace period for compliance.

“We’re giving people time to adjust,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “Starting from August, anyone who overstays their visa will be fined $15 for each day they remain in the country illegally.” He further explained that overstaying for three months could lead to a five-year ban, while overstaying for a year or more would result in a ten-year re-entry ban.
