In a moment that reflects years of dedication, brilliance, and impactful service, the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo (UNIMEDTH), proudly celebrates the elevation of its Chief Medical Director, Professor Michael Olumide Gbala, to the prestigious rank of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology by the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo.

This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to a career defined by excellence in clinical practice, academic scholarship, research innovation, and visionary healthcare leadership spanning nearly three decades. With over 80 peer-reviewed publications in respected local and international journals, alongside contributions to academic textbooks, Professor Gbala has firmly established himself as a leading voice in medical science. His earlier recognition as a Professor by Wesley University further underscores his distinguished academic journey.

Widely respected for his expertise in Materno–Fetal Medicine, Professor Gbala has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes.

His work continues to shape policies, influence clinical practices, and inspire a new generation of medical professionals.

A Life of Purpose, Excellence, and Impact

Born in Ondo into the family of Late Pa Phillip Elijah Osewmiju Gbala of Ode-Irele and Late Mrs. Kemiade Gbala (née Adegboyega) of Ondo Kingdom, Professor Gbala’s journey of excellence began early. From St. John Bosco Primary School to Independence Grammar School, Ondo, he distinguished himself as the best graduating student, showcasing exceptional academic brilliance.

His passion for science was evident when his team secured first position in the JETS competition across Ondo State in 1990. He later earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, graduating with distinction in Biochemistry.

His postgraduate training at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital culminated in the prestigious Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS). He also holds fellowships from the West African College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FWACOG) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS), and serves as an examiner for the West African College of Surgeons.

Further strengthening his leadership capacity, he obtained a Certificate in Leadership and Management in Health from the University of Washington, USA, alongside professional affiliations including Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management (FCIHRM) and Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (AMCIPM). His academic and spiritual depth is also reflected in his Diploma in Theology from the Redeemed Bible College.

Pioneering Leadership and Institutional Growth

With over 26 years of professional experience, Professor Gbala has played a foundational role in the growth of the University of Medical Sciences and its Teaching Hospital. As one of the pioneer consultants of the Medical Village established in 2012—which later evolved into UNIMED and UNIMEDTH—his contributions have been both strategic and transformative.

He has served in several key leadership positions, including:

  • Former Chief Medical Director, Mother and Child Hospital, Ondo
  • Pioneer Lecturer at UNIMED (since 2015)
  • Pioneer Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UNIMED
  • Pioneer Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), UNIMEDTH
  • Current Chief Medical Director, UNIMEDTH
    His leadership has driven the development of clinical and academic programmes, accreditation processes, and inter-institutional collaborations across multiple universities and health institutions.

Driving Innovation in Healthcare and Education

Professor Gbala’s impact extends beyond administration into innovation and capacity building. He coordinated UNIMED’s first short certificate course in 2016 and contributed significantly to curriculum development, including programmes in Health Information Management.

He was instrumental in establishing the PhD Programme in Clinical Medicine in collaboration with the West African College of Surgeons and pioneered the Medical Students and Graduate Observership Programme at UNIMEDTH. His efforts have also strengthened postgraduate residency training across several departments.

At UNIMEDTH, he founded the Annals of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences Research (ACBSR), a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and research dissemination.

Champion of Public Health and Policy Development

A passionate advocate for maternal and child health, Professor Gbala chaired the committee that led to the expansion of maternal health services across Ondo State, a move that contributed to the Abiyamo programme under the Ondo State Health Contributory Scheme.

He also played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic as Secretary of the Technical Working Group of the state’s Inter-ministerial Committee. Currently, he serves as the UNIMEDTH Site Coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO) ACTION 3 Trial.

His contributions to policy, healthcare reform, and institutional development continue to leave a lasting imprint on the medical landscape in Nigeria.

Faith, Family, and Personal Life

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Gbala is a devoted Christian and a Senior Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, where he serves as Assistant Pastor in Charge of Province (APICP Admin), Ondo Province 2.

He is happily married to Pastor Mrs. Patience Gbala, a Chartered Human Resource Manager whose unwavering support has been instrumental in his journey. Together, they are blessed with children.
