Ekiti Airport Set to Launch Full Commercial Operations, Asserts Aviation Minister
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), confidently announced on Tuesday that the Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti is fully prepared for commercial operations.
This strong declaration came after the Minister inspected the airport’s facilities alongside the state Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, and senior government officials. Keyamo stated unequivocally that the airport is 99.5 percent complete and that full commercial operations will commence imminently.
He highlighted that the runway meets international standards and features a spacious apron that can accommodate multiple 737 small-body aircraft, positioning it on par with airports in developed nations.
“The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport is 99.5 percent ready for full commercial operations. All essential components for launching an airport are in place: a fire station, control tower, navigational equipment, and security systems are operational. Our runway adheres to international standards, and the apron can easily accommodate several narrow-body aircraft. Ekiti is prepared to join the global aviation landscape.
“The Governor has invested significant passion and resources since taking office, which demonstrates his unwavering commitment to this project. The next step is to engage all regulatory agencies in aviation to secure the necessary approvals.
“I personally landed here to affirm that it is safe for air travel, which is why Aviation 001 made this landing; it underscores my confidence in these facilities for public use. Commercial airlines will start operating here very soon,” the Minister asserted.
Governor Oyebanji echoed this optimism, expressing strong gratitude to the Aviation Minister, Aare Afe Babalola, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their decisive support that has made the dreams of the founding fathers and the Ekiti people a reality through the airport project.
The Governor, visibly excited about the airport’s readiness, emphasized that it aligns with the vision of former Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who initiated the project, as well as the current administration’s plans. He emphasized that the airport will significantly boost the state’s economy, creating jobs across agriculture, commerce, and tourism, as well as enhancing property values due to the expected influx of traffic.
“With the Honourable Minister’s landing here, it is a definitive confirmation that the airport is equipped for non-scheduled flights. Charter flights can land here without hesitation, and full commercial operations will begin shortly.
“This is a dual-purpose airport, serving both agro-allied products and commercial passengers,” Governor Oyebanji declared assertively.
Local residents gathered at the airport to celebrate, welcoming the Governor and the Minister with enthusiasm, songs, and dance.
The Minister arrived on Monday and departed the airport shortly after the inspection using the same aircraft that brought him in.
