Amnesty International Condemns Wike Over “I Wish I Could Shoot Him” Remark

Global human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has condemned comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his remark about Channels Television journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

The organisation described Wike’s statement where he said he wished he could “shoot” the journalist—as dangerous and unacceptable, warning that such rhetoric could threaten press freedom and the safety of media practitioners.

Amnesty International expressed concern that comments of that nature, especially from a public office holder, could create a hostile environment for journalists and undermine democratic values.

The reaction follows Wike’s outburst during a media chat in Abuja, where he criticised Okinbaloye over comments made on a television programme regarding the possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state.

While Wike later clarified that his statement was not a literal threat but an expression of frustration, Amnesty International insisted that public officials must exercise restraint and avoid language that could be interpreted as incitement or intimidation.

The organisation further called on authorities to uphold the rights of journalists to carry out their duties without fear of harassment, threats, or violence.

It also emphasised the importance of protecting freedom of expression and ensuring that members of the press can operate in a safe and enabling environment.

The development has sparked renewed debate over the relationship between political leaders and the media, as well as the need to safeguard democratic principles and press freedom in the country.
