A worker at an eatery in Otefe, Oghara, Delta State, has been shot dead by suspected cultists while returning home from work.
The victim, identified as Jeffrey, was attacked alongside his colleague, Daniel, on Saturday night while the two men were riding a motorcycle in the Oghara area.
According to reports, the assailants opened fire on the men between 10pm and 11pm. Jeffrey sustained serious gunshot injuries and was rushed for medical attention but later died.
His remains have since been deposited at a morgue.
Daniel, who also sustained injuries during the attack, survived and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital outside the immediate area.
A police source confirmed the incident, saying the authorities were informed that a young man identified as Jeffrey had been killed while returning home from work with his friend.
“We received a report that a young man named Jeffrey was killed while heading home from work alongside his friend in Oghara. His friend was also injured in the process,” the source said.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, also confirmed the incident, stating that both men worked at the same eatery and lived in apartments located close to each other.
The platform said Daniel, a recent graduate of Delta State Polytechnic, was taken to a hospital outside the immediate area for treatment because some hospitals nearby were reportedly on strike.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive of the suspected cultists and their identities, remain unclear.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Delta State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, did not respond to calls or a message sent to him as of the time of filing the report.
The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of residents and workers returning home at night in parts of Oghara.
