Obi Calls for Tougher Building Standards After Anambra, Ogun Tragedies

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged governments at all levels to strengthen the enforcement of building regulations following the recent building collapses in Anambra and Ogun states that claimed lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi described the incidents as heartbreaking and avoidable, stressing that they highlight the urgent need for stricter compliance with approved construction standards and regular safety inspections of buildings across the country.

Reacting to the collapse of a building at Amaokpala in Anambra State, reportedly occupied by residents including some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Obi expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He also lamented the similar incident in Ogun State, noting that the recurrence of such disasters within a short period raises serious concerns about building safety and regulatory enforcement in Nigeria.

According to the former Anambra State governor, protecting lives and property should remain a top priority for government, adding that preventable tragedies must not become a recurring feature in the country.

Obi commended the governments of Anambra and Ogun states, emergency responders, security agencies, medical personnel, and the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, for their prompt intervention during the rescue operations, saying their swift actions helped reduce the impact of the disasters.

He called on relevant regulatory authorities to intensify monitoring of construction activities, enforce adherence to approved building codes, and ensure that structures undergo routine integrity assessments before and after occupation.

Obi further stressed that the safety of students and young Nigerians should receive greater attention through sustained investment in secure educational facilities and decent living environments.

He maintained that the nation’s future depends largely on its young people and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote their education, welfare, and safety.

The former presidential candidate added that the twin incidents should serve as a wake-up call for both government and stakeholders in the construction sector to take proactive measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences across the country.
