South Africa Moves To Deport Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina Over Immigration Status Dispute

Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, is facing possible deportation from South Africa after the country’s Department of Home Affairs alleged that she does not currently hold legal immigration status.

The 25-year-old appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court on June 9 following her arrest in the Summer Greens area. She was later released on warning and is expected to return to court on July 16 as legal proceedings continue.

According to court documents, immigration authorities claimed Adetshina and her minor son were found during an investigation and were unable to establish valid legal status to remain in South Africa.

Immigration officer Adrian Jackson reportedly told the court that officials interviewed Adetshina and reviewed departmental records before concluding that she had no lawful residential status in the country. Authorities subsequently sought court approval to proceed with deportation processes.

The development follows an earlier decision by South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, who in March rejected Adetshina’s application seeking a review of the refusal of her request for a letter of good cause.

According to the minister, Adetshina had been informed in September 2024 of plans to withdraw both her and her son’s South African identity documents but did not respond within the required period.

The minister further alleged that she obtained a Nigerian passport before applying for a South African visitor’s visa and claimed the application was rejected over an alleged irregularity in supporting documents.

Authorities also alleged that she later entered South Africa through the Lebombo border crossing from Mozambique while presenting herself as a South African citizen.

Officials stated that her son’s immigration status is tied to the outcome of her own case.

As part of conditions attached to her release, Adetshina is required to remain at her registered address and notify immigration authorities of any changes to her residence, employment, or movement while proceedings continue.

No final ruling has been made on the matter, and the case remains before the court.
