Southwest Amotekun Makes Case for State Police, Reveals 500 Prosecutions

…As Ondo Amotekun Arrests Couple Over Robbery at Ex-Speaker’s Residence

The Council of Amotekun Commanders in the South-West has declared support for the establishment of State Police, describing it as a practical solution to Nigeria’s growing security concerns.

The position was made public by the Commander of the Ondo State Amotekun Corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who said decentralising the country’s security system would strengthen intelligence gathering, improve crime detection, and promote community-based policing.

According to Adeleye, the South-West security outfit has consistently maintained that state policing remains one of the most effective approaches to tackling insecurity nationwide.

He noted that the achievements recorded by Amotekun across the region, especially in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting criminal suspects, further justify calls for a state-controlled policing structure.

“In the last few years, the Council of Amotekun Commanders has remained consistent in its position that state policing is the best solution to the current security challenges facing the country,” he said.

He added that the familiarity of local security personnel with communities and terrain has contributed significantly to the success of operations carried out by the corps.

Adeleye disclosed that Ondo State Amotekun alone has arrested more than 500 suspects this year, with many already prosecuted and convicted.

“In several cases, the courts have upheld our actions, and a number of those convicted are currently serving jail terms,” he stated.

He described the proposed state police initiative as a major step toward strengthening internal security and ensuring faster responses to emerging threats.

The commander further assured that the South-West security network would align with any framework introduced by the Federal Government to implement state policing.

“We are ready to adapt and cooperate with any structure put in place to ensure the successful take-off of state policing,” he added.

Couple Arrested Over Robbery at Ex-Speaker’s Residence

Meanwhile, operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, have arrested a husband and wife in connection with a burglary at the Okitipupa residence of former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele.

The security outfit recovered seven stolen mobile phones and other valuables allegedly taken during the operation and prevented efforts to move the items to Lagos for sale.

The suspects, identified as Samson Osowe (28) and his wife, Ayo Oguneso (22), were arrested after intelligence-led investigations traced the stolen items to a transporter allegedly assigned to move them out of Okitipupa.

Speaking while parading the suspects, Adeleye said the arrests followed intensive investigations by Amotekun operatives.

He confirmed that all stolen phones had been recovered and displayed alongside the suspects.

According to him, investigations also led to the arrest of the transporter and exposed possible links to additional criminal activities within the area.

He said the suspects would be charged to court while investigations continue.

Also speaking on the incident, former Speaker Jumoke Akindele confirmed that the burglary occurred late Sunday night and involved the theft of expensive mobile phones and personal belongings.

She revealed that parts of the residence were damaged during the operation and renewed calls for state policing, citing Amotekun’s swift response and operational success in Ondo State.

Akindele commended the leadership and operatives of the corps for their commitment and urged the Ondo State Government to recognise and reward their efforts.
