Apostle Suleiman: ‘It’s a Waste of Time to Pray After Electing Bad Leaders’
Popular cleric, Apostle Johnson Suleiman, has stirred widespread reactions following a blunt message on leadership, national hardship, and empathy in Nigeria.

Speaking during a sermon, Suleiman delivered a hard-hitting critique of governance, stressing that prayer alone cannot correct the consequences of electing poor leaders.
“It is a waste of time praying when you have elected a bad person,” he said. “The only prayer you will now pray is for the grace to survive the suffering.”
He further condemned what he described as insensitivity from those in positions of authority, particularly during periods of tragedy. According to him, it is unacceptable for leaders to focus on public image while citizens are in pain.
“The height of insensitivity is when people are mourning and you are sending media to do damage control,” he stated.
Lamenting the current state of the nation, Suleiman noted that hardship and loss have become increasingly common, painting a troubling picture of normalised suffering.
“This is one of the most terrible times to be a Nigerian because evil is becoming regular. Death is becoming normal,” he said.
Reflecting on earlier times, he added, “Growing up, when a person dies in a street, for one month we are talking about it—but now it has become a normal thing.”
He concluded with a strong appeal for empathy, urging leaders to be more compassionate and sensitive to the struggles of the people.
“When people are grieving, tell your media men to keep quiet. It is lack of empathy,” he said.
