UNIMEDTH Commences Staff Promotion Exercise As CMD Commends Government’s Commitment to Staff Welfare
The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, has commenced its 2025 staff promotion exercise, reaffirming its commitment to rewarding excellence and strengthening its workforce. As of the time of this report, the exercise is ongoing across various departments and staff cadres. It has been widely described as well-organized, inclusive, and reflective of the institution’s dedication to merit-based career advancement.
Speaking during an interview, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Michael Olumide Gbala, commended the Ondo State Government for its proactive stance on staff welfare, consistent support, and commitment to policy continuity.
This exercise would not have been possible without the government’s unwavering support. We are witnessing the impact of proactive governance in how our staff are being motivated and empowered to grow, he said.
Dr. Gbala disclosed that a total of 188 medical and allied health personnel are being considered in the 2025 promotion exercise—149 senior officers and 39 junior officers.
He emphasized that the promotion process is strictly merit-based, with only staff who meet the established criteria being considered. He also commended the conducive environment created for the exercise, noting that staff were provided with refreshments and a comfortable setting to ease the process.
This is more than a routine exercise — it’s about fostering excellence and building a motivated workforce. The atmosphere is calm, organized, and respectful. We’re doing everything possible to ensure a smooth experience for all involved, he added.
Addressing the broader challenge of staff retention in the face of the ongoing “Japa” syndrome, Dr. Gbala highlighted several strategic measures implemented by the hospital.
We’re tackling this through a supportive work environment, competitive welfare packages, regular training opportunities, active research involvement, and flexible work schedules. Interestingly, we’re also witnessing an inflow of clinicians from neighboring states who find UNIMEDTH a desirable place to work, he noted.
The Director of Administration, Mr. Esan Titus, also praised the exercise, commending both the state government and hospital management.
This promotion process is a testament to effective leadership and sound policy implementation. It has been meticulously planned and executed, and we thank the government for continuously supporting our growth, he said.
A representative of the Civil Service Commission, Mr. Dele Isola, who is monitoring the process, expressed satisfaction with the exercise so far.
Staff members have demonstrated a clear understanding of the criteria. The process has been orderly and transparent, which is commendable. It’s encouraging to see institutions like UNIMEDTH uphold such high standards in administrative procedures, he remarked.
The promotion exercise is expected to continue over the coming days, with staff from various units participating in interviews and assessments. The hospital community remains optimistic about the outcome, as the exercise not only promotes career progression but also reflects the institution’s growing capacity to deliver quality healthcare through a motivated and competent workforce.
