University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Staff Trained on Health Law and Ethics
The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo City, under the leadership of Dr. Michael O. Gbala, recently sponsored a comprehensive training program on the Principles of Health Law and Ethics for its clinical and non-clinical staff. The event, which took place on February 26, 2025, drew a significant number of participants.

Organized by Waymaker Chambers, a Lagos-based law firm, the training was facilitated by Barr. Sesan Olajide, a seasoned legal expert with 35 years of experience. Notably, Barr. Olajide was the first lawyer to be employed as an in-house hospital lawyer in Nigeria in 1994 and served as the pioneer Director of Legal Services at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) until his retirement in 2024.
Key topics covered during the training included: negligence, privacy and confidentiality, detention of patients, Informed consent, assault on healthcare staff.
Participants praised the training as informative and empowering, and will receive certificates upon completion. The management of UNIMED Teaching Hospital, led by Dr. Olumide Gbala, received accolades for prioritizing staff training on contemporary health law and ethics issues.
Dr. Gbala emphasized the importance of applying the lessons learned in daily healthcare practice to benefit patients. This initiative demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery.
