Irate Youths Attack Alara Of Ilara-Mokin, Injure Olori
The Alara of Ilara-Mokin, Oba Aderemi Adefehinti escaped from being lynched upon when irate youths stormed his palace on Friday, 13th September, 2019 to attack him. The monarch was accused of refusing to performing rites for the New Yam festival held recently in the ancient town.
Wife of the monarch, Olori Adefehinti was not lucky as her husband. She was beaten and injured, but the monarch was rescued via the exit door at the back of the palace. It was alleged that the irate youths stormed the palace in their hundreds and were armed with many dangerous weapons and stones. Many valuable properties were said to have been destroyed in the palace by the irate youth.
On a condition of anonymity, a witness said “The traditional ruler is to be blamed, you can’t be a king and be thinking that you will not perform traditional rites during a big festival like the New Yam. He was expected to come to a place in the town to cut new yam and pray for the town in line with the customs.
“But after waiting for him for several hours and he didn’t show up, the youths mobilized to attack the monarch at his palace. The Alara was rescued out of his palace when it was realised that the youths might lynch the monarch, but unfortunately the Olori was injured in the process. She was bleeding when she was brought out of the palace by security men.”
Another witness said it took frantic efforts on the part of the elders before the angry youth could be pacified. The witness revealed that “He (Alara) has been irregular with the traditional rites of the town since he ascended the throne. We don’t know why he is behaving like that.”
Many security agents have been deployed to the town to maintain law and order.
