17 Killed in Coordinated Attacks by Suspected Herders in Benue State

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of 17 people following coordinated attacks by suspected herders on communities in Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas. The violent incidents took place between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Police spokesperson Catherine Anene reported that on April 17, 2025, at around 9:00 PM, intelligence was received about a large group of suspected militia advancing into the Sankera axis of Benue State, targeting communities around Gbagir in Ukum LGA. In response, tactical police teams were swiftly deployed to reinforce local officers and work with other security agencies to confront the attackers.

Despite their efforts, five people were found dead in Gbagir, and an additional twelve were killed in Logo before security forces arrived, bringing the death toll to 17. The attackers reportedly fled into the nearby forests bordering Taraba State as law enforcement continued their operations.

Anene urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to restoring peace. She also called for public cooperation as security efforts continue across the affected areas.
