Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Citizens’ Constitutional Rights
The Federal Government’s release of over 4,082 inmates will save more than ₦1 billion annually and help decongest correctional centres across Nigeria.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during the yearly Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja, revealing that President Bola Tinubu has also approved an increase in feeding allowances for inmates.
Additionally, 29 correctional centres located in residential areas will be relocated due to urban development. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that correctional facilities should be at least 100 meters away from residential buildings, citing examples such as the Uyo Correctional Centre, which sits opposite the Government House, and Suleja Prison, now surrounded by a growing community.
The minister further revealed that over 3,000 buildings in 240 correctional centres are undergoing renovations, with some structures dating back over 50 years, including one built in 1914.
Reflecting on security improvements, he noted that only two jailbreaks have occurred under Tinubu’s administration, with no external attacks on prisons.
Meanwhile, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised Tinubu as a true democrat committed to protecting citizens’ rights. He highlighted the President’s encouragement of constructive criticism and healthy opposition as vital to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
Idris also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to press freedom, especially as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) celebrates its 70th anniversary. He emphasized that a free and responsible press is crucial for governance, transparency, and national development.
