“Thank You for Forgiving My Father” — Hanan Buhari Speaks After Former President’s Passing

Hanan Buhari, daughter of the late former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians who chose to forgive her father following his death.

The former president passed away on Sunday, July 13, at a clinic in London after a prolonged, undisclosed illness. He had recently been discharged from intensive care before his condition deteriorated. Buhari was buried on Tuesday at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.

His death has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with tributes and criticisms flooding social media as Nigerians reflect on his legacy.

In an emotional interview with BBC Hausa, Hanan shared memories of her father and what she would miss most. “What I will miss most about him is his sense of humour. I look up to him as a part of me,” she said. “I want to thank everyone who forgave my late father.”

She acknowledged the pain of his passing but accepted it as divine will. “On behalf of our family, we are grateful. We have nothing to say to them except thank God,” she said. “He disciplined me to study, pray, and do things that made us happy. That is what I can say. But since Allah has decreed it, Alhamdulillah, I had the chance to be with him and read the Qur’an to him.”
