Sports: Super Eagles Star Doubtful for World Cup Qualifier
Super Eagles forward, Samuel Chukwueze, has emerged as a doubt for Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Eagles are scheduled to host Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on June 7 before travelling to Ivory Coast where they face the Squirrels four days later.
The AC Milan winger, who missed Nigeria’s international friendly against Ghana and Mali in March, is again in the race to be fit for the World Cup qualifiers after picking up an injury during the Rossoneri’s Serie A fixture against Cagliari on Saturday.
The 24-year-old was forced off the field at the start of the second half and was replaced by Rafael Leao.
On Sunday, Milan Post confirmed that the Nigerian had suffered a muscle to his thigh.
“Muscle problem in the left thigh for Chukwueze,” the publication wrote on X.
The extent of Chukwueze’s injury remains uncertain with further assessment needed to determine his recovery timeline but according to OrthoInfo, a publication that provides articles and other resources provide in-depth information about symptoms, causes, and treatment options for musculoskeletal problems, the former Villarreal man could be out for several weeks.
“If you are injured, take the time needed to let the muscle heal before you return to sports. Wait until your muscle strength and flexibility return to preinjury levels. This can take 10 days to 3 weeks for a mild strain, and up to 6 months for a severe strain, such as a hamstring strain,” the website wrote.
With Moses Simon still recovering from a lengthy injury, head coach Finidi George will have his work cut out as the Eagles hope to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
