Sanwo-Olu Apologizes to Lagosians Over Traffic Gridlock, Assures Swift Action
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has apologized to Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced on Wednesday and Thursday morning due to repair works on the Independence Bridge.

Sanwo-Olu, who visited the bridge on Thursday for an inspection, explained that the decision to repair it was made to prevent a potential disaster. He assured residents that alternative routes would be cleaned up and that more traffic officers and security personnel would be deployed, similar to measures taken during the December festive season.
The governor urged Lagosians to continue obeying traffic rules and advised offices to consider remote work arrangements while the bridge undergoes repairs.
The unannounced closure of the bridge on Wednesday led to a citywide gridlock, with Victoria Island and Ikoyi being the worst affected areas. In response to the chaos, Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, ordered the immediate reopening of the bridge to vehicular traffic.
The Federal Ministry of Works expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured the public that necessary repairs would be rescheduled to a later date.
