Ondo Assembly Seeks Stronger Synergy with Water Ministry for Improved Service Delivery

In a pledge towards ensuring access to clean and sustainable water, the Ondo State House of Assembly has called for increased collaboration between the Ministry of Water Resources and the legislature to promote better service delivery and accountability across the state.

The Chairman, House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Murtala Sulaiman, during a working visit to the Ministry of Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, commended the efforts of the Commissioner and his team, noting that visible progress has been made.

However, he emphasized that effective synergy with lawmakers is essential to achieve greater impact, particularly in identifying critical needs across constituencies.

“Honourable members are in touch with grassroots communities and know where the pressing issues lie,” he said. “We must be involved in advising on project locations to ensure equitable distribution of water resources.”

Hon. Sulaiman expressed concern over the lack of structured communication between the ministry and the House, particularly regarding the ongoing AFD-funded water project. He stressed that timely information is key for lawmakers to carry out proper oversight and inform their constituents about government interventions.

He also highlighted the need for logistical support from the ministry and contractors to enable effective field supervision, and urged the ministry to consider demographic data when siting water projects to avoid unnecessary community tensions.

While acknowledging the successes so far, he advised the Commissioner to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors and to maintain inclusive engagement with both past officials and current lawmakers.

Speaking during the visit, another member of the committee, Hon. Tope Agbulu, noted that the purpose of the meeting was to foster relationships and gain a deeper understanding of the ministry’s operations.

Acknowledging the leadership qualities of the Commissioner, Hon. Agbulu urged the ministry’s staff, particularly civil servants, to offer their full support, stressing that their dedication would reflect in the overall achievements of the administration.

“We know his capacity, we know what he can do. But for me, it is not about talk — let’s see results,” he added.

Also, a member representing Akure North, Hon. Kolawole Ologede, emphasized the critical role the ministry plays in improving the lives of citizens across the state.

He noted that while the ministry has been active in rural areas, many constituencies are eager to confirm their benefitting status.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Mrs. Victoria Adetoye, pledged the ministry’s continued commitment to the provision of potable water to the entire population.

The Commissioner, Mr. Ayodele Akande, also promised to work hand in hand with legislators for the betterment of residents across Ondo State.
