A 32-year-old trader, Oluwatoyin Ibikunle, has approached an Akure Customary Court with the intention of dissolving her 15-year marriage to Ayodeji, a 40-year-old vulcanizer, due to ongoing physical abuse and threats.

Oluwatoyin, a mother of three from Ibadan, expressed her concerns in court about the escalating violence in their relationship. “He’s irresponsible and often threatens my life. I believe it’s time for a change,” she stated, sharing her experiences of being humiliated and harassed.

She explained that her husband once asked her to leave their home under the premise of renovations, which she interpreted as a strategy to further undermine her. “I decided to leave because I could no longer endure the violence. My father-in-law even encouraged me to consider ending the marriage, given the difficulties I have faced,” she added.

In a surprising claim, Oluwatoyin revealed that her father-in-law had made an inappropriate proposal to her, offering ₦50,000 for an affair, which has added to the complexities of the family situation.

Oluwatoyin highlighted that Ayodeji neglects their children’s needs, placing the burden of responsibility solely on her. “The love has faded in our relationship. I believe it’s important for me to seek full custody of my children so I can offer them a better upbringing,” she emphasized.

Ayodeji has refuted these allegations, stating that his wife is wayward and prioritizes her business and relationships over family life. “She left our home and rented an apartment. I have made attempts to reconcile, but she demands a refund for her landlord’s payment. I was able to pay ₦15,000 out of the ₦20,000 she asked for, but she still refuses to return. I want to make things right,” he expressed.

He also accused Oluwatoyin of neglecting their children’s well-being, asserting, “Her focus appears to be on her business and other personal relationships.”

Magistrate Abiodun Obademi, the court’s president, encouraged the couple to reconsider their positions for the sake of their children, advocating for a peaceful resolution. The case has been scheduled for continued discussion on January 28, 2024, offering an opportunity for both parties to explore constructive solutions.
