LASU Faces Shutdown as Staff Unions Begin Indefinite Strike
Lagos State University (LASU) may face a complete shutdown as staff unions have declared an indefinite strike over unresolved issues with the university management.

The strike, which took effect on Thursday, July 31, 2025, was announced by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of staff unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a joint letter addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions said all staff across LASU campuses—including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and LASU Epe—must vacate their duty posts and withdraw services immediately.
The notice, signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Dr. Sylvester Idowu; and SSANU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi, stated:“Following the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee, we notify you that the indefinite strike action has commenced at Lagos State University.
This action will continue until all staff demands are met by the appropriate authorities.” They emphasized that the strike would remain in force indefinitely and called for full compliance from all members across the university system.
The strike comes just days before the start of the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, which were scheduled to begin on Monday. Students are now uncertain about the academic calendar, and campus activities have already begun to grind to a halt. As of press time, the university management had not issued an official response.
