Lagos Imposes ₦40,000 Fine on 17 for Open Defecation and Urination
The Lagos State Government has fined seventeen residents a total of ₦40,000 each for engaging in open defecation and urination in public places, part of renewed efforts to enforce sanitation laws and promote a cleaner environment across the state.

The fines were issued under the Lagos State Public Health Laws, which prohibit open defaecation and urination due to their adverse effects on public health, safety, and environmental hygiene. Offenders were arraigned before a mobile court and made to pay their penalties on the spot.
Authorities say the enforcement campaign is aimed at curbing unsanitary practices that contribute to disease outbreaks and degrade the state’s urban aesthetics. In addition to fines, offenders were warned that repeat violations could attract stiffer penalties, including longer periods of community service or higher fines.
Government officials reiterated that maintaining cleanliness is a collective responsibility and urged residents to utilise public toilets and sanitation facilities provided by the state. The enforcement drive is also expected to include public education campaigns to raise awareness of the health hazards associated with improper waste disposal.
The crackdown on open defecation and urination reflects Lagos State’s broader commitment to fostering a healthier, safer, and more attractive urban environment for all residents and visitors. The state government has pledged to sustain similar operations to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations moving forward.
