Fani-Kayode Dismisses Obi’s Presidential Chances Amid NADECO Controversy
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has stated that Peter Obi cannot become Nigeria’s president, following a growing controversy over remarks linked to the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

The dispute was triggered by comments attributed to Peter Obi, which stirred debate regarding the role and legacy of pro-democracy activists during Nigeria’s military era. His remarks were perceived by critics as being dismissive of individuals who played key roles in the struggle against military rule.
Reacting to the development, Fani-Kayode accused Obi of attempting to undermine the sacrifices made by members of NADECO, a group widely recognised for its role in resisting military dictatorship and advocating for the restoration of democracy after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
He emphasised that members of the pro-democracy movement endured severe hardship, including imprisonment, exile, persecution, and, in some cases, death, in their fight to restore democratic governance in Nigeria.
Fani-Kayode further argued that Obi did not play any notable role during that critical period, while others risked their lives in opposition to military rule. He criticised what he described as attempts to reinterpret or diminish the realities of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
In his remarks, he maintained that the sacrifices of NADECO and other pro-democracy activists must be preserved and respected, stressing the importance of protecting the integrity of the nation’s history.
He concluded by asserting that, based on Obi’s position and the controversy surrounding his comments, he does not believe the former governor can emerge as Nigeria’s president.
The development has sparked wider political debate, drawing renewed attention to Nigeria’s democratic history and reflecting rising tensions among political figures as future elections approach.
