Controversial Biafra Agitator, Simon Ekpa to Be Extradited to Nigeria Following Finnish Court Ruling

Simon Ekpa, a controversial Finnish-Nigerian separatist figure, is set to be extradited to Nigeria following a ruling by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti on April 18, 2025.

According to Daily Times, the court granted Nigeria’s long-standing request, with the transfer scheduled for July 15. Ekpa, who identifies as the “Prime Minister” of the self-declared Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, is accused of inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria while residing abroad.

Though often associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group has repeatedly distanced itself from Ekpa. “Ekpa operates independently. Linking him to IPOB is misleading and dangerous,” an IPOB spokesperson stated, reaffirming the group’s non-violent principles. Instead, Ekpa leads a fringe movement dubbed “Autopilot,” reportedly tied to a militant network called the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA), which has been linked to violent sit-at-home enforcement, kidnappings, and targeted killings.

Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa in November 2024 after months of surveillance. He now faces multiple charges including incitement, terrorism, and conspiracy. Officials claim his online broadcasts triggered violent attacks on both civilians and security personnel. Four other individuals have also been detained for allegedly financing his operations.

Nigeria’s extradition request was backed by evidence submitted under the Rome Statute, ratified by both nations. Finnish authorities emphasized that the ruling adhered strictly to due process and international legal standards.

The Nigerian government has welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as “a major step toward justice” and a clear warning to agitators attempting to destabilize the nation from abroad. Ekpa’s forthcoming trial is expected to garner significant international attention.
