AFCON: Pastor Adeboye Reflects on Failed Prophecy, Urges Discernment Among Believers
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has called on Christians to exercise discernment when receiving prophecies, following public reactions to a controversial prediction linked to Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.

Pastor Adeboye made the remarks while speaking at a recent programme at RCCG’s Redemption City, where he cautioned worshippers against placing blind faith in every spiritual declaration, describing the rise of questionable prophecies as a growing concern.
In a light-hearted but pointed reflection, the cleric referred to a viral prophecy that surfaced ahead of the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco, which suggested that Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman should be excluded from the national team. Although he did not mention any individual by name, the prophecy had gained wide attention on social media and was interpreted by many as predicting a negative outcome should the Atalanta star remain in the squad.
Adeboye used the example to stress the importance of wisdom, spiritual maturity and personal conviction, noting that not every prophecy circulating in public space is divinely inspired.
He advised believers to test spiritual messages carefully and rely on sound judgment, urging them to avoid being misled by sensational predictions, particularly those that generate confusion or fear.
The remarks have since reignited discussions on prophecy, accountability, and discernment within religious circles, especially as Nigeria continues its AFCON campaign.
