The Dome Gets New Name as Aiyedatiwa Honours Former Governor Mimiko

By Asaye Bankole

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has renamed the International Centre for Culture and Events, popularly known as The Dome, in Akure, after his predecessor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, in recognition of his contributions to the development of the state.

Aiyedatiwa announced the decision on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during a birthday celebration organised in honour of the former governor in Abuja.

With the new designation, the facility will henceforth be known as the Dr Olusegun Mimiko International Centre for Culture and Events.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Mimiko governed Ondo State between 2009 and 2017, during which he oversaw the construction of the event centre in Akure.

The facility was established to provide a suitable venue for cultural programmes, conferences, exhibitions, social gatherings and other major events within the state.

Over the years, The Dome has remained one of the prominent event centres in Akure, serving as a venue for activities involving government officials, private organisations, community groups and members of the public.

The decision to rename the facility after the former governor places his name on a major public infrastructure project associated with his administration.

It also recognises the role of successive administrations in shaping the state’s development and preserving the contributions of former leaders.

Aiyedatiwa, who succeeded Mimiko’s political successor, Rotimi Akeredolu, as governor, made the announcement during an event celebrating Mimiko’s birthday in Abuja.

The occasion provided an opportunity to honour the former governor and acknowledge his years of service to Ondo State.

Mimiko served two consecutive terms as governor from February 2009 to February 2017.

His administration implemented various programmes and infrastructure projects across the state during his eight-year tenure.

The renaming of The Dome is expected to give the facility a new official identity while retaining its original purpose as a centre for cultural activities and major events.

The state government has not provided further details regarding the implementation of the new name or whether additional changes to the facility’s operations will follow the announcement.
