The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government and congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the anniversary to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and renew their commitment to nation-building.
The minister described Nigeria as a country blessed with abundant human and natural resources, noting that its hospitality, diversity and human capital remained important national assets.
He said Nigeria continued to play a significant role in Africa and described the country as a beacon of hope under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that peace and stability were essential for national development, urging Nigerians to promote unity, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect regardless of ethnic, religious or regional differences.
He also called on citizens to emulate the patriotism of the nation’s founding fathers by demonstrating greater love for Nigeria and contributing to the building of a country that future generations would be proud of.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to pursue initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, strengthening national security and enhancing public safety.
He said the government was committed to creating an environment where Nigerians could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
The minister added that building a better Nigeria required the collective efforts of government and citizens, stressing that a new Nigeria was achievable through unity, determination and sustained commitment to national development.
The October 1 holiday will give Nigerians an opportunity to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary while reflecting on its achievements, challenges and aspirations for a more peaceful, secure and prosperous future.
