The National Examinations Council has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination, with the number of candidates involved in examination malpractice dropping significantly compared with the previous year.
The NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing on the examination results.
According to him, 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 SSCE, while 1,371,992 candidates actually sat for the examination.
Wushishi said 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
He added that 1,126,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, secured five credits and above irrespective of whether they passed English Language and Mathematics.
The registrar also announced a significant reduction in cases of examination malpractice.
He said 1,496 candidates were involved in malpractice in 2026, compared with 3,878 candidates recorded in 2025, representing a 64.74 per cent decline.
Wushishi attributed the reduction partly to the increasing adoption of computer-based examinations, which he said had helped to minimise opportunities for malpractice during NECO examinations.
Responding to questions from journalists, the registrar also addressed concerns surrounding so-called “miracle centres,” stating that NECO does not operate or recognise such centres.
He explained that the examination council registers examination centres based on established criteria but has no involvement in the operation of centres described as miracle centres.
According to Wushishi, any such centres operating within the country are either established by state governments or privately owned, stressing that NECO does not subscribe to the practice.
The release of the 2026 SSCE results provides candidates, schools and other stakeholders with access to their examination outcomes as the council continues its efforts to strengthen the credibility and administration of its examinations.
