Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, are expected to observe a number of traditional restrictions as the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Land, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, CFR, begins his annual seven-day Ulefunta traditional leave.
The traditional observance will commence on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, and end on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Adeyeye Michael.
As part of the traditional rites, the beating of drums has been prohibited across Akure main town throughout the period of the monarch’s seclusion.
The palace also announced the temporary closure of roads leading to the Deji’s Palace during the seven-day observance.
Motorists and other road users have therefore been advised to make use of alternative routes.
In addition, markets, shops and roadside stalls located within the vicinity of the palace are expected to remain closed for the duration of the traditional leave.
The palace urged residents to comply with the directives while continuing with their legitimate activities without fear or panic.
According to the palace, the annual Ulefunta observance provides the monarch with an opportunity to withdraw from public engagements, engage in prayers and seek peace, progress and prosperity for Akure, Ondo State and Nigeria.
The Ulefunta leave is an annual traditional practice associated with the institution of the Deji of Akure, during which the monarch temporarily withdraws from public activities in accordance with established customs.
The palace appealed to residents, traders, motorists and other members of the public to cooperate with the traditional institution throughout the period.
The notice concluded with the traditional Akure expression: “Akure a gbe a ooo.”
