Remi Tinubu Pledges to Wear Akwete Fabric if Tinubu Wins Second Term

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged to make the traditional Akwete fabric part of her wardrobe if President Bola Tinubu secures re-election for a second term.

She made the remark on Tuesday during her first visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State, where she also announced a ₦2 billion intervention aimed at reviving the centuries-old weaving industry.

Speaking with members of the cooperative, the First Lady praised the quality of the handmade fabric, describing it as soft, breathable and comfortable to wear.

“If God grants my husband a second term, I will be wearing buba and wrapper made from Akwete because it is made from soft, breathable cotton,” she said.

She commended the women for preserving the traditional craft across generations, noting that young people were also embracing the trade and helping to sustain the cultural heritage.

Oluremi Tinubu urged Nigerians to support locally made textiles, particularly Akwete fabric, saying increased patronage would help preserve indigenous craftsmanship while improving the livelihoods of local weavers.

The First Lady disclosed that she chose to visit the community without a prepared speech because she wanted to interact personally with the women rather than attend a strictly formal event.

She also praised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, describing him as “a good man,” while recalling that she had previously reached out to his wife to learn more about the Akwete weaving tradition.

Expressing gratitude that the visit eventually took place, she said she had long desired to meet the women behind the renowned fabric and was delighted that the opportunity had finally materialised.

As part of efforts to promote the indigenous textile industry, the First Lady announced a ₦2 billion donation to support the revitalisation and growth of the Akwete weaving industry in Abia State.
