Nigeria has recorded another major academic milestone as three young students won gold medals at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy, after competing against participants from 154 countries.

The Nigerian team comprised Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous and 11-year-old Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, who all emerged champions in their respective categories.
Chimdiebube Onwubiko claimed gold in the junior secondary mathematics category, while Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous won two gold medals in mathematics and science, earning recognition as the overall best science student at the global competition.
Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, a Primary Six pupil, also secured a gold medal in the primary mathematics category, making him the top-performing primary school mathematician at the Olympiad.
The students represented Nigeria after months of intensive preparation before travelling to Italy for the international competition.
Their participation was sponsored by Alex Onyia, Chief Executive Officer of Educare, who funded the team’s trip and accompanied the students alongside their teachers to Rome.
Reacting to the achievement, Onyia described the victories as a proud moment for Nigeria, expressing confidence that sustained investment in young talents would produce a generation capable of competing with the best in the world.
A memorable moment during the award ceremony was the surprise appearance of Egejurum’s mother, who travelled to Rome to witness her son’s gold medal presentation.
Beyond the competition, the Nigerian delegation also participated in cultural and recreational activities, including a boat ride with students from other countries and a visit to an amusement park.
The remarkable performance of the three students has been widely celebrated as another testament to the academic excellence and global competitiveness of Nigerian youths.
