Abia Police Arrest Woman for Allegedly Attacking 12-Year-Old Niece with Knife
The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to kill her 12-year-old niece, Ebo Chimamanda, during an assault at their residence in Umuahia.

The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing the suspect attacking the young girl with a kitchen knife. In the footage, the victim was seen crying and pleading for help while a man intervened to stop the assault.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, officers from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly after receiving credible intelligence, rescued the girl and arrested the suspect.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on July 5, 2026, at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia. Police said the suspect allegedly attacked the child after she failed to spread clothes she had been instructed to dry before the woman left for the market.
Investigators also discovered that the victim, who lives with her aunt, had allegedly been subjected to repeated physical abuse and threats to her life prior to the incident.
Police recovered the kitchen knife allegedly used in the attack as evidence.
The command disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, adding that the suspect will be charged with attempted murder upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Abia State Police Command condemned the alleged attack and urged members of the public to promptly report cases of child abuse and other forms of violence to the nearest police station.
