The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested Ibobuminaten Oweifa, son of the traditional ruler of Okodi Community in Ogbia Local Government Area, over the alleged assault and burning of a resident accused of stealing plank wood.

The Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Yenagoa.
According to the police, the incident occurred on June 24, 2026, at about 7:05 p.m. The suspect allegedly accused Godgift Biko of stealing plank wood, tied him with wire and reportedly set him ablaze using fuel and a lighter.
Police officers attached to the Okodi Division were said to have responded immediately after receiving the report, rescued the victim and arrested the suspect.
The victim was taken to a clinic in Okodi Community, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The police command said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
Condemning the incident, Edebor warned residents against jungle justice and all forms of violence, stressing that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.
He urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to security agencies rather than resorting to self-help.
