The spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi, has secured the All Progressives Congress ticket for the Ekiti North I (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rotimi emerged victorious in the party’s primary election on Saturday after reportedly winning 22 of the 24 wards in the constituency, defeating eight other aspirants.
According to a statement issued by the media unit of the House spokesman, the exercise produced “a clear outcome” in favour of the incumbent lawmaker.
Among those defeated in the primary were former member of the House of Representatives, Bimbo Daramola who was believed to be a preferred Aspirant of Governor, Oyebanji.
Others are: Erelu Kemi Elebute-Halle; Mr Gbenga Joseph; Prince Ayorinde Ejioye; and Engr Ayo Omotosho.
The statement noted that the contest initially attracted more aspirants before some contenders stepped down and endorsed Rotimi ahead of the exercise.
“In the build-up to the exercise, the field gradually narrowed as three aspirants formally stepped down and endorsed the incumbent.
“They include Mrs Funke Owoseni, Mr Kayode Omoboya, and Barr Yemi Ayeni, all of whom publicly aligned with the incumbent’s return bid ahead of the primaries,” the statement read.
It added that party stakeholders across the constituency had also endorsed the lawmaker before the primary election.
Rotimi, who is serving his first term in the House, was appointed spokesman of the 10th House of Representatives and has remained one of the prominent voices in the National Assembly.
Political parties across the country have intensified primary elections and internal consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several incumbent lawmakers seeking return tickets.
The statement described the APC primary as peaceful and transparent, saying it reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
“The election was conducted peacefully and competitively, underscoring internal party democracy within the APC, while ultimately producing a clear and decisive mandate for the incumbent ahead of the general election cycle,” it stated.
